Lavender Sparks a Successful Handmade Soap Business Ep 5-Handmade CEO

March 4, 2020 Maria Laurin 4 Comments

In Episode 5 of the Handmade CEO podcast, I interviewed Priya.  She makes all-natural handmade soaps, bath salts, candles, bath bombs, and lotion bars.  Priya’s line of products are not only natural, but she grows a lot of the herbs that are used in her line Kaya Soaps.

Priya started her business after her girls went away to college.  It was the thing that felt most natural to her.  I know a lot of times, we want to start making money, but the idea of going to work can become so overwhelming that you decide to get crafty instead!  I definitely felt this way too.

After a lot of trial and error, Priya finally created a soap recipe that she loved.  Her soaps are not only beautiful, but they’re also moisturizing in a way that most manufactured soaps are not.  Each one is hand-cut and contains things like natural herbs, spices for color, oatmeal, and honey.  They truly are a work of art!

When I asked Priya what Kaya meant, she told me it was a word from the Sanskrit language, meaning body.  The beauty in using this lovely name is that its a direct representation of the goal to provide wellness to the mind and body through natural products.  Kaya Soaps has adopted a zero-waste philosophy, which makes your purchase even more rewarding.  Priya said that the best part about owning her own business was that she’s able to be her own boss, and have flexible hours.

Tune in to hear all of the details of how Kaya Soaps went from zero income to now hiring two part-time employees!  Kaya Soaps can be found on Etsy, Uncommon Goods, and Amazon Handmade.

Priya’s advice to those starting a handmade business…

Don’t give up; keep trying.  – find out your A,B,C and Ds

A – Ability to work, there is no shortcut to hard work in handmade business, are you able to work hard for long hours?

B – Believe in yourself – have patience, your day will come!

C- Confidence, Capacity, and Consistency – Be confident, increase your capacity to work, and handle stress. Consistency is the key!

D – Determination. It is your passion; if you are determined, then no one can stop you from achieving anything!

All the best and good luck to you 🙂
